"AI and Fine Art Photography: Threat, Tool, or Transformation?" Panel Talk with AZPA

AI and Fine Art Photography Panel Talk at Mood Room
Panelists: GCU Professor Isac Artzi, artist Gina DeGideo, & photographer Rick Gayle

Date/Time: Saturday, May 3, 4 - 6 PM
Location: 3121 N 3rd Avenue, Unit 100 Phoenix, AZ 85003

Photography transformed fine art forever—now AI's turn has come. Will it blur our essence or provide us with a vivid new perspective?

Join us for a 90-min panel discussion on AI in photography, covering tools, art, ownership & the future with experts. The discussion panel will be moderated by AZPA member Dave Cano, along with three panelists: Professor Isac Artzi, Ph.D., M.S., Grand Canyon University, College of Engineering and Technology, Arizona Photographer and Artist Gina DeGideo, BFA, and AZPA board member and photographer Rick Gayle.

The discussion will start with photography’s history as one that took bold leaps, from darkrooms to digital, and now AI is pushing the boundaries once more. Just imagine, AI crafting images from scratch or even critiquing work with a machine’s eye—what does that mean for creativity and who gets to call it theirs? The panel will explore an intriguing question: is AI a threat, a tool, or a transformation for our craft?

Panelists will start with the familiar—how AI sharpens the tools we already use—and build toward what’s next. Expect a lively mix of insights and debate, drawing from photography’s past and its cutting edge.

As an Arizona native, growing up in the desert and constantly studying the ever-changing terrain, she is fascinated with the transitions and transformations found in the landscape, both man-made and natural, and personal relationships with nature. Her art has been exhibited nationally and belongs in many private collections.

Rick Gayle, since the age of 12 has been attracted to light like a moth. For Rick, light is all a photographer ultimately has control over and the way he molds its qualities helps define objects and tells stories. For Rick that is and always will be his venue for exploration and excitement. Rick is the guy at the table in a nice restaurant using the napkin to reflect the candlelight into the wine glass.

Memento Mori_Step Gallery.jpg

We live in a death-denying culture. We fear the unknown and what could be more unknown than what exists beyond our living reality? So, we have created mythology around it, fabricated a number of stories to help us cope, but in daily life, we typically ignore it. However, times are changing, and there is a growing need to come to terms with our own mortality.

Artists historically are the cultural disseminators, particularly of difficult to digest ideas, and the subject of death is not new. One simply need to look to the 17th century vanitas paintings, or the Victorian post-mortem photography to find historic examples. While the western philosophy around death has been buried into social obscurity, the prevalence of serious contemporary artwork about death has been expanding. Memento Mori will showcase a collection of works from contemporary artists, each approaching the theme of death and photography in their own unique way, spanning from literal to symbolic, from deeply personal to abstract cultural interpretations.

Gallery Hours: Thursday - Saturday, 12 - 5 PM

First Friday Reception on February 1, 6 - 10 PM

Gina DeGideo presents Along the Way in her first solo showing of this photographic work at Eye Lounge. For over five years DeGideo has been using a simple plastic camera and film to photograph her intuitive response to the things and people encountered in her daily path. What began as a way to keep functioning creatively while too busy with traditional life roles, has become a visual journey through the chaos of life and the revelation of unexpected beauty and peace discovered within those moments of our subconscious.

Dreams Exhibition at Center for Fine Art Photography
Exhibition Dates: November 4 - 26, 2016
Reception: Friday, November 11, 6 - 8PM

Dreams connect the space between real and surreal.  They derive from fragments of our stream of consciousness.  Our life’s memories, our desires, and our fears reshuffle and play-back in visions that may appear obscured by double-vision, or be crystalized by a hyper-real clarity.  Often, they exist with the support of an uncanny logic or disjointed symbolism.  Whether hopeful or menacing, dreams pull on the strings of our most raw and primal emotions.
