Memento Mori III at ASU Harry Wood Gallery

Memento Mori III
Opening Reception: Halloween Tuesday, October 31, 4 - 6 PM
Exhibition Dates: October 31 - November 9, 2023

Image: “Ash Cloud" by Andrew Binkley

Created in conjunction with ASU’s online Death and Photography class, "Memento Mori III" is a biennial group exhibition featuring artwork on the theme of mortality. We live in a death-denying culture, but while the western philosophy around death has been buried into social obscurity, the prevalence of serious contemporary artwork about death has been expanding.

"Memento mori" is a Latin phrase which translates to “remember you must die", and has served historically as a sentiment which affirms that facing the certainty of death has the perhaps unexpected effect of embracing life.

This exhibition will showcase photo-based works from contemporary artists, each approaching the theme of death in their own unique way, spanning from literal to metaphorical, from deeply personal to abstract cultural interpretations.

What is Left

Eye Lounge
Exhibition Dates: October 15 - November 7, 2021
Opening Reception: Third Friday, October 15, 6 - 9 PM

Eye Lounge presents What is Left, a new multimedia exhibition by artist Gina DeGideo. This work examines the surroundings and remnants from the literal pathways traveled over the past year-and-a-half, between her and her father’s homes.

As a natural explorer, confined to the limited movements at home throughout most of 2020 until now, she takes a closer look at the dynamic and ever-changing landscapes below her feet and above-head. Whether finding a portal to another universe in a backyard puddle or seeing millions of years into history in the sky out her front door, this work reflects on discovering the deepest truths from the tiny worlds that surround all of us.

Join the artist for her third and final solo exhibition at Eye Lounge: Fridays, 6 - 9 PM, Saturdays, 1- 5 PM, and Sundays, 11 AM - 3 PM. The gallery is also accessible daily from our next-door neighbors at MADE Art Boutique.

"Memento mori memento vivere" is a latin phrase which translates to “remember you must die, so remember to live,” a sentiment which affirms that facing the certainty of our own mortality has the perhaps unexpected effect of embracing life more fully. We live in a death-denying culture, but while the western philosophy around death has been buried into social obscurity, the prevalence of serious contemporary artwork about death has been expanding. Created in conjunction with ASU's online Death and Photography class, Memento Mori: Memento Vivere is a group exhibition showcasing image-based works, including historic photographers from the Northlight Gallery’s Solari Collection, as well as contemporary artists, each approaching the theme of death in their own unique way, spanning from literal to symbolic, from deeply personal to broader cultural interpretations.

Memento Mori: Exhibition on Photography and Death
Opening Reception: Third Friday, September 20, 6 - 9 PM

Memento Mori_Step Gallery.jpg

We live in a death-denying culture. We fear the unknown and what could be more unknown than what exists beyond our living reality? So, we have created mythology around it, fabricated a number of stories to help us cope, but in daily life, we typically ignore it. However, times are changing, and there is a growing need to come to terms with our own mortality.

Artists historically are the cultural disseminators, particularly of difficult to digest ideas, and the subject of death is not new. One simply need to look to the 17th century vanitas paintings, or the Victorian post-mortem photography to find historic examples. While the western philosophy around death has been buried into social obscurity, the prevalence of serious contemporary artwork about death has been expanding. Memento Mori will showcase a collection of works from contemporary artists, each approaching the theme of death and photography in their own unique way, spanning from literal to symbolic, from deeply personal to abstract cultural interpretations.

Take a Moment
Exhibition Dates: September 1 - December 11, 2019

How do we make sense of the busy world around us? For two Phoenix area artists, it means making art that requires people to stop, look and think. Paige Reesor’s tiny paintings of local buildings and popular landscapes make familiar sites seem newly discovered again. She creates these images with hopes that people will revisit these popular locations in their minds. Gina DeGideo’s work is also about pausing to observe and appreciate the things she sees and experiences. She purposely takes time during her day to take photographs. The process helps her to slow down, and really think. This exhibition explores how two artists use art making to center themselves amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Both artists share their work in hopes that viewers will also be drawn in and take a moment to enjoy.

Myths, Legends, and Dreams Online Exhibition

Myths Legends and Dreams
PhotoPlace Gallery (Online)

Photography has the ability to make visible scenes that never did or never could exist, thus providing artists with the ability to fabricate stories, create legends, and delve into self-reflection. For this exhibition, we seek images that bring us into your world of fantasy and reflection.

We are very pleased that Amy Holmes George has agreed to jury this exhibit. She will select approximately 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, and an additional 35 images for our Online Gallery Annex.

Juror’s Statement

Wow! What a thrill and an honor to review such compelling and thought-provoking imagery with extraordinary levels of ingenuity. Thanks to all the artists who shared their work with me. The theme Myths, Legends, and Dreams lends itself to a rich and multi-interpretational platform for making art—art that can be playful and haunting, abstract and representational as well as literal and imagined. You will see all approaches considered in the works selected for this exhibition. These images stand as a testament to the ever-broadening definition of the medium of photography, while also offering refreshing takes on classic tales, dreamscapes, and difficult-to-explain phenomena.

I believe there is an element of magic that unites all this work, along with the unusual capacity to connect with the viewer in deeply profound ways. I was especially fascinated by images that emerged from developed bodies of work, in which the artist is pursuing a cohesive photographic vision. It’s always exciting to discover an artist who understands how to harmonize his/her creative voice, establishing a signature style that can be easily identified yet does not appear formulaic, familiar, or redundant. Also, I encountered a lot of work that surprised me with its clever transcendental quality—taking me somewhere else, a place of the artist’s invention. Much of the beauty of a photograph is in its inherent nature to communicate a “truth.” However, many of the images in this show challenged my sense of what’s real by fabricating a convincing “new reality.”

Dreams connect the space between real and surreal.  They derive from fragments of our stream of consciousness.  Our life’s memories, our desires, and our fears reshuffle and play-back in visions that may appear obscured by double-vision, or be crystalized by a hyper-real clarity.  Often, they exist with the support of an uncanny logic or disjointed symbolism.  Whether hopeful or menacing, dreams pull on the strings of our most raw and primal emotions.

2016 Krappy Kamera Exhibition

Opening Reception: Tuesday, March 1, 6 - 8PM
Exhibition Dates: March 2 - April 2, 2016

New York, NY-Soho Photo Gallery’s March show will feature the winning entries from the 18th International Krappy Kamera Competition, work by the gallery’s members, as well as photography by Jennifer Shaw.  The Krappy Kamera Competition originated at Soho and is one of the high points of the year.

Susan Burnstine, an award winning fine art and commercial photographer, was the competition’s juror, judging images captured with krappy kameras including Holgas, Dianas and homemade cameras.

“In today’s digitally driven world, manufactured perfection tends to be the norm. But in the world of “krappy” plastic and pinhole cameras, the lack of technical control allows for unforeseen imperfections such as light leaks, vignettes and blurs that can transform what may have been an average image into something spectacular.”

The exhibition Working the Land: Arizona Farming and Ranching Families features four local artists: Scott T. Baxter, Gina DeGideo, Jay Dusard, and Jill Ison, all making contemporary photographic work of farming and ranching families and individuals still working in Arizona.

Whether it is through the viewpoint of their own family life, documenting others, or from conversations with historical photographs, each artist has worked closely for years with the people in the photographs to show a dynamic look at their lives, rarely seen by the common passerby.

Alternative Cameras: Pinholes to Plastic

Exhibition Dates: December 22, 2015 - January 15, 2016
Juror: Susan Burnstine

Often perfection is a direct result of embracing imperfection. The term “happy accident” has become synonymous with wildly flawed alternative approaches including toy, pinhole and homemade photography, as they frequently rely on elements of chance and luck. But there have been some who have tamed these unpredictable, faulty beasts to yield purely poetic results by letting go of technical control and connecting with their inner photographic child.

It was great joy to spend time with these wonderfully imperfect images and I applaud everyone who submitted. Having to narrow down a selection for the physical and online exhibits was an immense but gratifying task. In the end, the selected images seamlessly merged consistent aptitude with an element of unpredictable chance, thus creating lyrical results. I congratulate all the selected artists and sincerely thank everyone who submitted such fantastically flawed work.
