When Gilbert farmer Marvin Morrison went about his work overseeing his vast fields of cotton and alfalfa, he also nurtured the field of photography.

With his Pentax Zoom 105 Super, Morrison took pictures of the mundane — the irrigating fields, the cotton stomping, the bales of alfalfa being cut, grain silos being filled and myriad other farming scenes.

Those scenes have all but disappeared in today’s Gilbert of more than 220,000 residents. Most of those vast expanses have been turned into the Morrison Ranch master-planned community. But for a glimpse of the past, head to Art Intersection this month. On Saturday, the gallery and photographic arts space in downtown Gilbert opens “Revisiting the Photographs of Marvin Morrison,” an exhibition by artist/photographer Gina DeGideo built around historical pictures that were loaned by the Morrison family...

When he was young, he rose before dawn to tackle chores on the farm. As the years wore on and he no longer had to do so much of the physical labor himself, he still started his day at 4 in the morning, getting farm business out of the way by 6 so he could get on with other important matters, like serving the school board, Rotary Club and Methodist Church. And through much of it, Marvin carried a camera.
